Linoleum is much less popular than it was several decades ago and can be confused with vinyl flooring. However, Linoleum is actually made from natural materials and is recyclable and if properly looked after, it is very durable flooring.
Pros
• Linoleum is soft and comfortable underfoot yet durable and versatile
• It requires low maintenance
• It comes in a wide variety of colours and patterns
• It is renewable and biodegradable so therefore eco-friendly (unlike vinyl)
• There are several types and installation options
Cons
• Linoleum can be prone to sunlight damage from long-term exposure
• It can be prone to moisture damage
• It is soft, so could be prone to scratches or be torn
• If unsealed, it will require regular buffing and polishing
• Freshly installed linoleum will off-gas (non-toxic)
As with most types of flooring, linoleum has its pros and cons, but it is still very much an option for consideration as an inexpensive, eco-friendly flooring.
